20th Century Fox unexpectedly dropped the first teaser trailer and poster this morning to Fantastic Four, the reboot of Marvel Comics’ first family of superheroes written and directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle). It looks like the complete shroud of secrecy in regards to any glimpse of the film has been lifted, the floodgates are finally open.

The first image from the set was released yesterday, and today we get our first look at the film, which as expected, bears very little in common with the two previous big screen versions.

To say this will be a dark re-telling would be an under statement. The tone and sci-fi aesthetic set by Trank strays far away from what Disney are doing with their Marvel films, and heads very much centers on a story of victims of a military experiment gone horribly wrong.

We get some sneak peeks at the superpowers of the iconic heroes, Johnny Storm’s flames, Sue Storm’s force shield and Reed Richards’s stretching ability. There is also a quick tease of Ben Grimm emerging from a rock pile, transformed into The Thing.

We should assume that 20th Century Fox wants a larger cinematic universe that also includes X-Men, Deadpool, Gambit and X-Force down the line. Though I’m cautiously intrigued, frankly this trailer is so committed to dark sci-fi that it makes me really wonder how they plan on pulling some kind of grand combined superhero continuity together.

From Fox:

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
