The impressive (most impressive) first look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is finally here, giving us a taste of what we can expect from the first prequel spin-off film set before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope.
With The Force Awakens hitting Blu-ray earlier this week, it looks like Lucasfilm is all set to move beyond the over $2 billion grossing Episode VII and start hitting the promo pavement for the next Star Wars film. This dark prequel story will lead directly into the iconic events of Episode IV.
Directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), Rogue One will fill us in on the rag tag team of Rebel Alliance loose cannons assigned to steal the plans to the Death Star that allow Luke Skywalker to obliterate it at the end of A New Hope.
“It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know,” said Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy last August about the spin-off adventure.
Today’s sneak peek shows us the Death Star, the Yavin IV Rebel Alliance base, various squads of Storm Troopers, AT-ATs, a pair of Palpatine’s crimson Imperial Guards, Mon Mothma and could that be a cameo from Darth Vader?
It’s certainly very assuring to see how well the Star Wars aesthetic George Lucas introduced to moviegoers in 1977 holds up recreated all these years later in the hands of a next generation director utilizing a great mix of practical and CGI effects .
The cast is lead by Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso) and also stars Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen and Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma).
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16th.
