Felicity Jones IN, Tatiana Maslany OUT of the Running For Lead In Gareth Edwards’ STAR WARS Stand-Alone Film?

The Clone Club had high hopes that Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany may have locked the lead role in Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars stand-alone film set for December 2016 after clearing her schedule of her upcoming off-Broadway debut in Neil LaBute’s The Way We Get By.

Not so fast it seems. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm and Disney have set their sights on The Theory Of Everything‘s Felicity Jones, who is in talks star in the film which also recently brought Chris Weitz (About A Boy) aboard to pick up screenwriting duties from Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli).

The Oscar-nominated actress was on the widely reported short list reading for the high profile role along with Maslany and Rooney Mara. Aaron Paul and Edgar Ramirez are on the internet’s hot rumor list for the male lead. Also to take with the obligatory grain of salt is the film will focus on a group of bounty hunters in a heist heavy storyline eyeing the theft of the plans to the first Death Star. If true, that means the movie will take place before Star Wars: A New Hope and likely after Star Wars Rebels, to of course possibly conclude with the death of many Bothans.

The first stand-alone Star Wars film has a December 16, 2016 release date.
