We’ve been anxiously counting down to the first trailer to the much discussed and over scrutinized Ghostbusters reboot from director Paul Feig, and now the wait is officially over. So how does the new all female team team stack up next to the unforgettable line-up from the 1984 comedy classic?
Feig reunites with his Bridesmaids stars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig and teams them with current SNL‘ers Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones to pick up the proton packs of the iconic paranormal investigators.
I can’t say this really knocked it out of the ballpark for me. It certainly looks great (check out Slimer in full state of the art CGI glory), and I have absolutely no problem with the direction this reboot is taking. But after all the anticipation, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, mainly in the humor department.
The first impression here certainly doesn’t scream slap stick, and the typically over the top McCarthy appears to be taking on a more subdued character than were used to seeing. But the jokes didn’t hit hard enough for a first tailer that needs to really hit some home runs to get the masses on board for this.
I have the feeling it’s going to be the McKinnon and Jones show, and if the role is executed correctly, Chis Hemsworth could clean up with some big laughs too. Kate McKinnon delivers big every week on Saturday Night Live and Leslie Jones is likely going to blow up the screen in the best ways possible with her immense screen presence.
This is only the first look, so there’s a lot more to come before the film’s summer release, especially when it comes to fleshing out the main cast’s characters a bit more.
Set for July 22, 2016, Ghostbusters stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth, Andy García, Neil Casey, Michael K. Williams and Matt Walsh.
