The first posters for Spider-Man: Homecoming have been released, one depicting the Marvel wall crawler relaxing on the Queens side of the East River with a rather grand view of the New York City skyline and the other climbing Avengers Tower.

This laid back first look at Tom Holland’s teenage Spider-Man was unveiled on the film’s Twitter account and shows him taking five wearing his high school jacket and headphones. The note on the accompanied tweet says: “Homework can wait. The city can’t.”

As far as New York City geography goes, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers Tower (the former Stark Tower) is where the Met Life Building stands in real life and in very close proximity to Grand Central Station. With Robert Downey Jr. appearing as Tony Stark, it’s not surprising to see the HQ of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on the first poster to reference this film as the first Spider-Man adventure taking place directly in the MCU.

The second one-sheet offers a view looking towards downtown NYC from Avengers Tower, showing Spidey clinging to the building’s “A” logo.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Directed by Jon Watts, the film also stars Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton,  Zendaya, Donald Glover, Bokeem Woodbine, Jon Faverau, Logan Marshall-Green, Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, Abraham Attah, Martin Starr, Tony Revolori, Michael Barbieri, and Angourie Rice.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7th.

Spider-Man and Iron Man will share scenes on the big screen following Captain America: Civil War. Robert Downey Jr. has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming and will appear alongside star Tom Holland in Sony’s upcoming reboot film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

To be a fly on the wall when RDJ walks into a meeting with Disney about appearing in additional Marvel projects beyond his original contract.

The actor reportedly nailed a cool $40 million to appear for his role in Captain America: Civil War, a film outside of the initial multi-picture deal that included three Iron Man films and roles in The Avengers series. Another amazing victory for Team Downey for signing what is likely another sweet paycheck and lending further assistance assimilating the Wall Crawler into the MCU.

The two heroes will continue their connection in Homecoming after their initial team-up in Civil War, with Tony Stark in a possible mentor role to the teenage Peter Parker.

The addition of Iron Man should not come as a complete surprise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made it clear cross-overs are part of the MCU Spider-Man game plan.

“He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth,” Feige said.

Last night during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, the next big screen wall crawler Tom Holland took to the stage and revealed Spider-Man: Homecoming as the title of the upcoming reboot.

How much the title fits into the film’s plot remains to be seen, but it’s a not-so-subtle nod to Spider-Man joining the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe with his re-introduction in Captain America: Civil War following the deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. Sony had exclusive movie rights to the character with the five previous big screen adventures starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but Marvel Studios now has creative control of this latest take with Tom Holland taking on the role in Civil War and the upcoming solo film.

The Captain America: Civil War marketing monster has asked us to choose a side: Team Captain America or Team Iron Man. The new final trailer to the film not only sets the stage for the epic showdown, but finally gives us our first look at the new Spider-Man!

Sure there’s a boatload of new footage featuring Cap, Iron Man, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch and The Winter Soldier, but it’s nonetheless amazing the final shot is what is the money shot. We have our first look at Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as played by Tom Holland.

It’s been no real secret the iconic wall crawler, previously a Marvel character seen exclusively on the big screen in Sony films, would make his first appearance in the upcoming third Captain America film that falls under the Disney banner and allowing him to join forces with heroes line-up of The Avengers. The deal to share the character between the two studios was announced last February.

Along with the trailer comes this new one-sheet showcasing Team Cap versus Team Stark.

Here is the official synopsis for Captain America: Civil War:

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Get ready to pick a side and join the nonstop action playing out on two fronts when Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and set for May 6th, 2016, Captain America: Civil War‘s all star Marvel line-up includes Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Emily VanCamp (Agent 13), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Frank Grillo (Cross Bones), William Hurt (“Thunderbolt” Ross), Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo), Martin Freeman and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

With Tom Holland signed up as the new big screen Spider-Man, Sony and Marvel reportedly have their casting sights set on Marisa Tomei to play Peter Parker’s Aunt May.

Sources tell Variety the Academy Award winning actress is in final negotiations for the role and an multi-picture offer was made last week.

Whether Tomei signs in the dotted line remains to be announced. Sony and Marvel Studios are co-producing the next Spider-Man film, which will be directed by Jon Watts.

Tomei may not have to wait for Spidey’s next big screen adventure to play Aunt May. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the character would make her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe along side Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, which is currently shooting.

May Parker was previously portrayed on the big screen by Rosemary Harris in Sam Raimi’s trilogy which starred Tobey Maguire, and most recently by Sally Field in Marc Webb’s two films starring Andrew Garfield.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016. The still untitled Spider-Man reboot is slated for release on July 28, 2017.

It was expected that this announcement was imminent, and in a statement released today, Marvel and Sony made it official. 19 year old Tom Holland has been cast as the new Spider-Man/Peter Parker, and expected to make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War.

We reported last week it was down to four actors in line to assume the role, and Holland was on the short list. The character will be re-booted for the next stage of his big screen adventures, with both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures utilizing him in films taking place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

From Marvel:

Let the web-slinging begin. Marvel announced on Tuesday that 19-year-old British actor Tom Holland, star of 2012’s tsunami drama The Impossible, HBO’s Wolf Hall, and the stage phenomenon Billy Elliot: The Musical, will take over the role of Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man, due in theaters in 2017.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.  The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of “Cop Car,” the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director.  The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in “The Impossible,” “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming “In the Heart of the Sea,” and by a series of complex screen tests.  Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

In addition to the casting info we learned Jon Watts, director of the Sundance hit Cop Car, will helm Sony’s next Spider-Man film which will hit the big screen in July 0f 2017.  Disney & Marvel Studios will co-produce that film, keeping it in line with the massive continuity of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man

Notably absent from this press release is any mention of Spider-Man’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which is currently shooting in Georgia. His inclusion will finally see the iconic Marvel wall crawler teaming up with Iron Man, Captain America and various other members of The Avengers.

Spider-Man played a pivotal role in the Civil War comic book storyline which the next Captain America film will take heavy cues from. It’s unlikely Peter Parker will follow the same path in the movie version given Marvel’s plan to reboot him as a high school crime fighter. You can read more into Spider-Man’s role in the Marvel Comics’ Civil War storyline HERE.

The identity of the actor cast as the new Spider-Man would have likely leaked once he reports to the set of Civil War in the upcoming weeks to shoot scenes. How big a role Spidey has is not yet known, and as of now, his appearance is still unconfirmed by Marvel. But if Holland is seen on set next to Robert Downey Jr. by paparazzi lenses, that is why the official casting announcement was expected sooner than later.

Captain America: Civil War is set for May 6, 2016.  The all star line-up includes Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Emily Van Camp (Agent 13), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), William Hurt (General Ross) and Chadwick Boseman making his debut as Black Panther.
