CBS and Warner Bros. Television have released the first image of Iddo Goldberg suited up as DC Comics’ sentient android Red Tornado as he’ll appear on CBS’ Supergirl.
In the lore of the upcoming series, Red Tornado is the villainous creation of Dr. T.O. Morrow, who likely created the robot weapon in his own image since both characters are portrayed by Goldberg.
In the comics, the super android was also the creation of Dr. Morrow, but merged with the consciousness of an alien from the planet Rann to gain sentience, took on a human secret identity and eventually became of member of the Justice League.
From CBS:
“RED TORNADO is the most advanced android the world has ever seen. Designed by scientist T.O. Morrow for the U.S. Army as the ultimate super weapon, he soon becomes sentient, posing a grave danger to National City — including the people Supergirl cares about most.”
The character has previously appeared in Cartoon Network’s Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice.
No secret here, there will be obvious comparisons between Red Tornado and Paul Bettany’s The Vision, also a sentient android, who made his big screen debut this summer in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. CBS is trying to pull of the same effect, put a real actor in a suit rather than go all-CGI, but on a limited weekly television budget. We’ll soon see how it works out.
There is also the case of Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer/ The ATOM in The CW’s Arrow and Paul Rudd’s big screen Ant-Man. Both heroes wear similar tech suits and have the ability to shrink. With countless characters with diverse powers out there in the combined DC and Marvel line-ups, it’s interesting and surprising to see similar characters turning up in their live action projects.
Melissa Benoist stars as Kara Zor-El/ Supergirl. The series features Calista Flockhart (Cat Grant), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), David Harewood (Chief Hank Henshaw), Mehcad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Faran Tahir (The Commander), Peter Facinelli (Maxwell Lord), Jenna Dewan Tatum (Lucy Lane) and Laura Benanti (Alura Zor-El). Former Superman and Supergirl Dean Cain and Helen Slater are also on board as Kara’s earth parents Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers.
Supergirl premieres on CBS Monday, October 26th at 8:30 PM.
