Well this is one big disappointing kick in the ass for all us Twin Peaks fans: David Lynch announced today via Twitter that he has backed out of directing Showtime’s revival of his groundbreaking series set for a nine episode run in 2016 over what could be budget issues.
Dear Twitter Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks.

After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. — David Lynch (@DAVID_LYNCH) April 5, 2015
This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime.

I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently. — David Lynch (@DAVID_LYNCH) April 5, 2015
Showtime issued the following statement in response to Lynch’s announcement:
“We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points.” “Showtime also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.”
Entertainment Weekly has word that it will be business as usual for Peaks looking ahead, with or without Lynch at the helm. “Nothing is going on that’s any more than any preproduction process with David Lynch,” a source close to the show told EW. “Everything is moving forward and everybody is crazy thrilled and excited.”
As much as I am psyched to see a revival of Twin Peaks, I don’t think there is any fan among us who will not be nearly as excited knowing the eccentric Lynch is no longer involved moving forward. Granted, all nine scripts penned by Lynch and Peaks co-creator Mark Frost have been delivered to Showtime, so the course has been set so to speak. But with Lynch stating he has contacted cast members about his about face, it certainly implies that there could be others who may jump ship with him at the helm. So far only Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Agent Dale Cooper has been officially confirmed to return. Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) and Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs) announced at the Twin Peaks UK Festival they are on board as well.
