Twentieth Century Fox announced some release dates shuffles for their upcoming genre film slate that stretches into 2017. As far as newsworthy notes go, the studio confirms (to no one’s surprise) that Channing Tatum has been cast as Marvel Comics’ Gambit and will star in the X-Men spin-off set for October 7, 2016. The Gambit screenplay was penned by Joshua Zetumer.
Tatum also tweeted this out to his fans this evening as well.
How do you say October 7, 2016 in Cajun?

It’s possible Tatum could make a soft big screen debut in the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, which will precede Gambit a few months earlier on May 27, 2016. However with the main thrust of that film to take place in the ’80s, it’s anyone’s guess right now exactly where in the rebooted X-continuity (courtesy of the events of Days of Future Past) Fox and Marvel plan to incorporate the Cajun mutant into.
So for the record, in 2016 we can now look forward to three films set in the X-Men universe when we include the Deadpool spin-off film starring Ryan Reynolds set for February 12th. Both Deadpool and Gambit have already appeared on the big screen in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Taylor Kitsch played Gambit and Ryan Reynolds was Deadpool. The revamped timeline from Days of Future Past allows Tatum to assume the role of Gambit in addition to seeing Reynolds return as the Wade Wilson, the Merc With A Mouth.
As far as Fox’s release date switches go, the third entry in the revamped Planet of the Apes series has moved from July 29, 2016 to July 14, 2017.
Perhaps really getting ahead of themselves, the already scheduled sequel to the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot will now hit screens five weeks earlier, moving from July 14, 2017, to June 2, 2017.
The adaptation of the video game Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender finally has a release day slated for December 21, 2016.
