This seems more of a formality than actual breaking news, but it looks like Ryan Reynolds has finally signed on the dotted line to star as Marvel’s Merc With A Mouth in the big screen Deadpool solo movie according to Deadline and more importantly, a tweet from the actor today.

Reynolds has been a passionate fan of the character for years, and despite Wade Wilson’s terrible first appearance (and subsequent demise) on the big screen in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has championed getting another shot to play the popular wisecracking antihero in a solo film.

Impressive leaked footage from a proposal reel to 20th Century Fox leaked online earlier this year starring Reynolds and directed by visual effects wiz Tim Miller received an amazing reception from fans may have played a part in the studio green lighting the solo film for its 2016 Marvel film slate. Reynolds called the positive fan response to the violent test reel which saw Deadpool frequently break the fourth wall “awe inspiring.”

Of the many great things to say about X-Men: Days of Future Past, the repercussions of its continuity cleansing plot line allows Reynolds to reprise the role while completely ignoring anything to do with his first go round. We’re all hoping for an offbeat R-rated adaptation, and that is a long ways away from officially being determined, especially in regards to the plans Fox has for the character beyond this solo film. Will Reynolds sign on for the rumored X-Force movie down the line? Fox surely has plans to expand their Marvel properties as much as they can.
