Blame those damn “creative differences.” The big screen Wonder Woman solo adventure starring Gal Gadot will have to find a new director. Michelle MacLaren has left what would have been her feature film debut according to Warner Bros.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio confirmed MacLaren is no longer involved in the film spotlighting the iconic DC Comics Amazon princess set for June 23, 2017.
Per WB:
“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.”
There were rumors circulating back in December that Warners had as many as six screenwriters tapped to develop six different screenplays. If true that doesn’t exactly scream out there was a clear cut vision set for the movie. The studio made it a priority to land a female director when MacLaren was announced in November of 2014. Whether this affects the release date remains to be seen. Wonder Woman reportedly had a fall 2015 production start.
It’s not to say the veteran television producer / director, whose impressive resume includes stints on Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and The X-Files, is out of the comic book movie biz for good. According to The Wrap, she could very well switch sides and land over at Marvel Studios to helm their first female-led superhero film Captain Marvel, slated for November 2018.
