It looks like Tom Hardy will not have the opportunity to play a second DC Comics villain after Bane on the big screen. According to The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter, scheduling conflicts have forced the actor to drop out of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which also stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevinge.
Hardy was set to play Rick Flagg, the leader of a team of super villains recruited by the government to take on lethal missions. The film he is currently shooting, The Revenant, looks to run over schedule and leave Hardy little free time before he embarks on the worldwide press tour for Mad Max: Road Fury. The tight window Hardy had for availability in April to be on the Toronto Suicide Squad has dwindled to the point of no return.
Reportedly Ayer’s End of Watch star Jake Gyllenhaal is the director’s top choice to fill the now vacant role. Gyllenhaal has waited in the wings to take on a comic book role, it’s been years since he reportedly had talks with Sony to replace Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 2.
Suicide Squad is set for for release on August 5, 2016.
