Production on CBS’ Supergirl pilot starring Melissa Benoist in the title role is currently under way and the network has very little interest in keeping the updated version of the iconic costume a secret.
Two images of Benoist fully decked out in Kara Zor-El’s super threads adorned with the familiar House of El crest have been released, designed by three-time Academy Award winner Colleen Atwood, who also sucessfully took on the task of revamping the television costumes for The Flash and Arrow.
“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” Atwood said in a press release.
These first look pics do appear to have a very generous helping of Photoshop magic all around (especially noticeable in the second photo), so I imagine the final look on the show still could be somewhat different. The design certainly fits well with the established Flash/Arrow DC TV-verse, and with the three shows sharing the Berlanti Productions creative team, who knows if sweeps-friendly cross-overs are being planned for somewhere way down the line.
It’s a pleasant surprise to see that CBS hasn’t strong armed the Warner Bros. TV folks into using a bright colored costume that you would think is more appealing to their network audience. Frankly I would have expected something closer to Helen Slater’s old school big screen pajamas than this muted color version that is ultimately far closer in texture to Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel movie suit.
