Some of Krypton’s well known alumni are flying into secret guest-starring roles on CBS’s Supergirl pilot. Former television Man of Steel Dean Cain and the big screen Supergirl Helen Slater will join Glee‘s Melissa Benoist, who is set to star as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El.
Cain gained fame in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which aired on ABC from 1993-1997, while Slater played the title role in 1984’s big screen Supergirl. They both also appeared on The CW’s Smallville, Slater as Lara-El, Superman’s mother, and Caine as the immortal villain Dr. Curtis Knox.

Based on the characters from DC Comics, the project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Prods., centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist). Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
Earlier this week Chyler Leigh joined the cast as Kara’s foster sister Alex, and David Harewood has been tapped to play Department of Extra-Normal Operations Chief Hank Henshaw, They join Ally McBeal alum Calista Flockhart (Cat Grant), Mehcad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen) Laura Benanti (Alura Zor-El).
The show is produced by Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions, which together also now has on their plate Arrow, Flash, and the just announced in-development spin-off show set in that established DC Comics television universe.
