The writer behind the big screen Asgard is going to give some muscle to Eternia. Christopher Yost has been tapped by Sony Pictures and Escape Artists to re-write the script to the upcoming adaptation of Masters of the Universe.
Yost added his talents to Thor, Thor: The Dark World in addtion to co-writing the next installment in the series, Thor: Ragnarok. Previous drafts of the MOTU script were written by Terry Rossio and Jeff Wadlow.
This will be the second big screen version of Mattel’s iconic toy line that spawned the popular ’80s syndicated animated series. The first forgettable attempt starred Dolph Lundgren (He-Man) and Frank Langella (Skeletor) in a low-budget adventure set mainly on contemporary Earth (as in 1987.)
As a fan of Masters of the Universe, after seeing Thor: The Dark World it want hard not to picture that 2013 Thor sequel as an off- shoot adventure of one of He-Man’s allies. Marvel Studios’ version of Asgard and the Nine Realms, inhabited by larger than life God-like beings who have mastery of magic and possess advanced sci-fi worthy technology, could be an easy cinematic cousin to MOTU‘s main setting Eternia. I even pointed out in my review of The Dark World that the filmmakers of the eventual MOTU adaptation will have their work cut out for them with the numerous over lapping story points in both properties.
I feel Yost is a solid choice here, if not also an obvious one. He has a proven ability to adapt this kind well established fantasy world in grand cinematic terms, and just as important, is familiar with well playing diplomat juggling studio heads and the inherent merchandising provisions that go hand in hand here.
It will be interesting to see who will be cast as the next big screen versions of He-Man, Skeletor, and Teela. Let’s hope and assume state of the art visual FX will give us a ferocious Battle Cat and stunning versions of Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain.
