It may have gotten lost among the countless movie clips released online during Comic-Con by the time it was pulled by studio lawyers, but as it turns out that Deadpool movie test footage was actually legit.
Well if it wasn’t legit, the initial low res-version of the footage that went viral for a few hours would still be online. The Warner Bros. suits earned their keep this weekend in getting every bootlegged clip of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice footage screened in Hall H pulled of the internet. So the 20th Century Fox folks (who own the movie rights) followed suit in regards to the clip that showcased the violent tone and unorthodox direction of the proposed hard R-rated big screen feature for Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth.
Fans were not pleased with Deadpool’s treatment in his X-Men Origins: Wolverine big screen debut. Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed the character in the film, has adamantly championed the proposed edgy solo feature, which among other things features Deadpool breaking the fourth wall to address the audience since the 2009 X-Men spin-off was released (which also saw Wade Wilson meet his demise).
When this clip surfaced over the weekend, it was obvious that Reynolds provided the voice in the footage, leading to rampant speculation that the clip was legit and not another well produced fan made trailer. Inevitably it was taken offline, adding further fuel to the fire it was real. Blur Studios, the FX house owned by Deadpool director candidate Tim Miller, has confirmed that the clip was leaked from eight minutes of real test footage. We’ll assume Robert Rodriguez has moved way past the potential project.
