In this case, the Internet rumors were right on the money. Warner Bros. made it official tonight and confirmed that Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Tom Hardy have signed on to star in David Ayer’s adaptation of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad.
The worst kept casting secret was Leto, who will indeed play the Joker in the film, and has the thankless task of following Heath Ledger as the big screen Clown Prince of Crime. The Joker will have Harley Quinn by his side, played by Margot Robbie. The Wolf of Wall Street bombshell was also heavily linked to the film in the last few weeks. Will Smith is set for Deadshot and Tom Hardy will add another comic book villain to his resume as Rick Flagg. Rounding out the cast are Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Jai Courtney as Boomerang.
Variety reports that the role of the Squad’s no-nonsense recruiter and boss, Amanda Waller, may be offered to Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and… Oprah Winfrey. Addiotionally, let’s not forget those rumors that Jesse Eisenberg may appear in the film, reprising his Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice role of Lex Luthor.
“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures in the official press release.
The film, set for release on August 5, 2016, follows a group of super villains recruited by the government to take on deadly assignments in return for redemption, though the lethal missions will likely be their last.
