Are you ready for more superheroes on television? DC is really storming the airwaves, and has another high profile property on the fast track.
TNT has a pilot set for a reboot of the Teen Titans and will be led by none other than Dick Grayson’s Nightwing, who will assemble a team of next generation heroes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Titans is near a pilot order from the cable channel and the EP/writing team of Akiva Goldsman and Marc Haimes.
Based on characters from DC Comics, Titans revolves around a group of young superheroes-to-be who are recruited from every corner of the DC universe. The action-themed drama centers on Dick Grayson, who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new superheroes including Starfire, Raven and more. The show is described as a dramatic adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book titles ever.
DC and Warner Bros. already have Arrow and The Flash on CW, Gotham on Fox and Constantine on NBC set for the fall. Earlier this week word that a rebooted Supergirl television series was in the earliest stages of development as well. A teen-less Titans show has the possibility to add a lot of fan favorite characters to the small screen, including Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy, who are staples in the Cartoon Network’s animated campy Teen Titans Go! series.
Some of the various Teen Titans over the years have included Kid Flash, Speedy and Cyborg. If Wally West is introduced in CW’s The Flash (Iris West is a featured character after all) it’s possible the younger speedster could make his way to Titans. IF that cross-over card is played again. Victor Stone will be seen on the big screen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so it’s unlikely Cyborg would factor into the show. Speedy, or rather the Roy Harper character, is already a main player on Arrow.
Arrow has thrown in many clever easter eggs over the course of its two seasons but no mention of Batman. The show has The Flash as a direct cross-over & spin-off, so that seems to be the main stage television DC Universe for now (which according to most reports, will NOT share chronology with the big screen DC Universe). Featuring a young Bruce Wayne, Gotham would be set decades in the past if it were to fit into all of this and would never have the opportunity to introduce the Dick Grayson character who becomes Robin and then Nightwing. But I think it’s safe to assume that Dick Grayson or Robin will be in the least mentioned in Batman v Superman.
It’s interesting to note that two shows will feature Batman characters, but will not have the Dark Knight himself appear. Even when Smallville was on the air, a live action Batman was exclusively a big screen character and never made it onto the show in any way. It will be interesting to see how much Batman mythos will influence Titan‘s Nightwing.
