Kicking off 2014’s New York Comic Con even before the doors opened to the public at the Javits Center, The U.S. Postal Service, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment hosted a first-day-of-issue event that revealed the Limited Edition Forever Batman Stamps which mark the 75th anniversary of Gotham City’s Caped Crusader.
The ceremony took place next to the unmistakable Batman statue from The Dark Knight Rises and in front of past and current big screen Batman costumes. The eight Batman inspired stamp designs were culled from four different eras of the DC superhero’s history: the Modern Age, the Bronze Age, the Silver Age, and the Golden Age. The set depicts four distinct versions of the iconic costume and Bat emblem.
The event was hosted by Ralph Garman, who was joined on stage by James Cochrane, U.S. Postal Service Chief Information Officer and Executive Vice President, comic book artist and DC Entertainment Co-Publisher, Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio, Greg Breeding, who designed the stamp set, and Batman himself.
“It is an honor to have the U.S. Postal Service feature the Caped Crusader on this new set of stamps in celebration of his 75th anniversary,” Jim Lee said at the ceremony. “Batman has inspired and influenced fans around the world for generations and will continue to do so for the next 75 years and beyond, and we hope that fans will add these stylized stamps to their Batman collection.”
Following the ceremony, the speakers were available to sign collector’s edition posters and event programs for those in attendance. Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27, which hit newsstands on March 30, 1939. The iconic issue was written by Bill Finger and featured artwork by Bob Kane.
