With Jurassic World sitting pretty as the third highest grossing movie of all time, it didn’t take Universal and Amblin long to announce a follow-up will hit theaters on June 22, 2018. Director Colin Trevorrow who will be back as EP on the next film, teased some plot points that will likely factor in the fifth entry in the series.
Yes of course, SPOILERS ahead if you have not seen Jurassic World…
While chatting with Wired, Trevorrow (who will co-write the screenplay) first and foremost put our minds at ease regarding the initial question most of us have about the next Jurassic adventure: Will the action take place off of Isla Nublar?
“[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island,” Trevorrow said. “That’ll get old real fast.”
“I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponize it and later on we found it could be used for energy.”
The plan to weaponize dinosaurs wasn’t one of the stronger plot points of Jurassic World in my opinion, but the larger concept certainly leads to the necessary off-the-island direction the series needs to pursue. It’s an interesting analogy Trevorrow brings up in non-coincidental terms with man’s history of nuclear development.
The post JW off-the-island narrative necessitated by Dr. Wu’s escape with dino DNA, leads to the exciting possibilities of seeing different corporate brands of dinosaurs duking it out on the big screen.
“And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?”‘
“And Dr. Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr. Mesrani, ‘we’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur’. I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe — we’re not.”
The Jurassic World follow-up is set for June 22nd, 2018. Trevorrow in addition to script duty, will join Steven Spielberg as an Executive Producer.
