First he was. Then he wasn’t. Then Joaquin Phoenix was in final talks in late July to announce something big at Comic-Con. Then the deal fell through. Frankly I couldnt imagine Phoenix fitting into the big screen Marvel machine and all that is involved with it.
Well it looks like Benedict Cumberbatch is back on top of Marvel’s list to play their iconic Sorcerer Supreme on the big screen according to Deadline’s Mike Fleming, which fans will not have a problem with. He is reportedly entering final negotiations for the high profile role of the former surgeon turned supernatural superhero. Cumberbatch has a boatload of genre cred (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit) and the acting chops to potentially knock it out of the ballpark. Marvel already established the existence of Doctor Stephen Strange in their cinematic universe with a quick mention of him in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Already set for July 8th, 2016, Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson from a script penned by Jon Spaihts.
