With the disaster of an idea that was January’s The Legend of Hercules starring Kellan Lutz firmly behind us, we can look towards the much better concept of Dwayne Johnson owning the role in this summer’s Hercules. The Fast & Furious and G.I. Joe star has already posted some images on his Twitter page, but USA Today got the opportunity to debut the first official pics from the film of Johnson all decked out as the mythical strong man. The first trailer is set to debut online on Tuesday.
“It’s when Hercules breaks through the chains and becomes the demi-god he was born to be,” Johnson told USA Today. “I was actually yelling with all the power I could muster, ‘I am Hercules!’ I gave it my all and made myself pass out every time we did it. But I honestly felt in that moment that I was born to play this role.”
Based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, the film is set after the hero has passed the 12 Labors, traveling with a team of mercenaries until he’s recruited to train an army for war. “The No. 1 goal is to make the definitive version of Hercules,” Johnson said. “We know we’re going to be under a microscope.”

Directed by Brett Ratner, Hercules also stars Aksel Hennie, Rufus Sewell, Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt, Rebecca Ferguson and Tobias Santelmann.
