First Image of Jason Momoa As Aquaman From BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Revealed!

Well this is what you get when you cast someone as physically imposing as Jason Momoa as DC Comics’ King of Atlantis, as if anyone was really expecting a smiling blonde guy in bright colored tights. After much speculation as to how Momoa would look, this is the first sneak peek at the cinematic version of Aquaman, not Rob Zombie.

Late last night director Zack Snyder tweeted out “There is only one true King” along with the first official image of the former Game of Thrones star in full costume wielding a trident and heavily inked out in tribal tattoos as Aquaman. It surely firmly retires the hero’s familiar fish scaled orange and green tights look straight down to Davy Jones’ Locker.

For his expected brief appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Momoa’s look keeps to the armored warrior aesthetic previously seen in Gal Gadot’s Amazonian Wonder Woman costume and the futuristic Kryptonian battle suits seen Man of Steel. We also know Affleck’s Batman will have a Dark Knight Returns-inspired suit of Bat-armor. It’s not to say that the actual color scheme of Aquaman’s tribal wear will not reflect darker hues of the comic book version just as the Superman and Wonder Woman outfits do. Snyder’s image appears to be a mostly monochrome manipulation, so I would expect the actual look on screen will have some dark earth tones that reflect the comic book origins.

Momoa looks pretty awesome, and it’s an edgy Polynesian look that will wash away the public perception of Aquaman’s lame duck status in the Justice League, SuperFriends and even Entourage as the guy who breathes underwater and talks to the fishes. But after seeing Gadot’s gritty warrior princess look as Wonder Woman, I can’t say this reveal is at all surprising. Obviously Snyder is assembling a team of armored titans for his future Justice League, and not a bunch of wisecracking colorful crime fighters.

Snyder uses the hash tag and tagline on the image “Unite The Seven,” which may refer to the Seven Seas, and that Aquaman must join the underwater kingdoms together in the grand planned overall cinematic story line. But the phrase more likely refers to the assembling the seven members of the big screen Justice League at the conclusion of Batman v Superman, which will be comprised of Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Momoa), Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Green Lantern (TBA). Maybe Synder is hinting he will have more to reveal soon, since things have been pretty quiet on the BvS promo front as of late (though it is still more than a year away from release).

Snyder hinted to CBS Detroit last August that Momoa’s Aquaman may even be formidable enough to take on the Man of Steel:

“The cool thing with Aquaman is his trident – people don’t realize that can actually cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. And he’s super strong, because of course he can exist at these super deep depths so when he comes up here he’s like… he’s crazy strong.”
