The first trailer to Star Trek Beyond dropped online today and it certainly wastes no time in hitting warp speed. But should we expect anything less from Fast & Furious director Justin Lin?
Set to the drum heavy beats of the Beastie Boys’ classic ‘Sabotage,’ (which was also heard in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot), the 90-second first look does not pull any punches in showing the epic scale the film will have set during the starship Enterprise’s 5-year mission.
After directing the first two installments, Abrams passed the Trek torch to visceral action guru Justin Lin so he could helm Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Lin directed the third through sixth installments of the Fast & Furious franchise. Paramount had to look no further than the Enterprise’s engineering section for a writer, as Simon Pegg was tapped to co-pen the screenplay (with Dough Jung) after Robert Orci stepped away from scripting duties.
With this new creative team in place for the third installment starring the cast led by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, Beyond already looks and feels to be a solid departure from what we’ve come to expect.
Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) join the cast, both seen in heavy make-up in this trailer.
Star Trek Beyond is set for July 22, 2016 and stars Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (McCoy), John Cho (Sulu) Simon Pegg (Scotty), Anton Yelchin (Checkov), Joe Taslim, Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba.
