Fillion Booster

During a Firefly panel at Wizard World Comic Con Chicago, Nathan Fillion shared the news with fans that if he had his pick of any DC or Marvel super hero to play, his choice would be Booster Gold.

“I think I could take a pretty good crack at Booster Gold,” Fillion told fans in attendance. “That’s kind of my niche — show-offy, vain. I think I could handle that — not too bright.”

The DC Comics hero and Justice League member debuted in 1986 and hails from the 25th Century. Booster gets his powers from stolen museum artifacts: an advanced super suit and Legion of Superheroes flight ring. A former jock caught betting on his own games, Michael Jon Carter seeks glory by retreating to the distant past using Rip Hunter’s time machine.

It was speculated the time traveling character set to appear in The CW’s upcoming series Legends of Tomorrow could be Booster Gold, but it wasn’t meant to be when Arthur Darvill was cast as Rip Hunter in the show.

GalleryChar_1900x900_boostergold_52ab8b16cab6b4.43568615

If things don’t pan out to play Gold, Fillion was up for taking a stab at a far more obscure DC hero: Ambush Bug.

Remember that guy? Little bit off his rocker,” he said. “You’d never see my face.” Fillion finished strong with another character he could hit out of the ballpark. “But I think Greatest American Hero is due for a reboot.”

The Firefly and Castle star was an early favorite to play the Green Lantern on the big screen (Ryan Reynolds took that bullet), but went on to voice the character in the animated Justice League direct-to-DVD features Doom and Throne of Atlantis.

I think its only a matter of time Fillion finds his way to a live action super hero role. With time travel playing a major role in The CW’s The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, it would hardly be a stretch to add Booster Gold to the mix.

You can check out video of Fillion’s Wizard World appearance along with his Firefly co-stars Adam Baldwin and Summer Glau below.

Eric Martsolf portrayed Booster Gold on an episode of Smallville in 2011, teaming up with Blue Beetle and Tom Welling’s Superman-in-training.

I think most Browncoats  would agree that there is still not nearly enough Firefly goodies out there for us to treasure on our collectors shelves. Though that’s not to say what is out there is not really cool. There is something to be said for quality over quantity in merchandising, even for a cult show that ran eleven episodes on Fox in 2002.

But the quality factor is upheld here as well as the cool factor when it comes to these statues, figures and must-have’s.

Quantum Mechanix has an truly impressive line of Firefly/Serenity collectors items which range from statues, figures, plush dolls, animated maquettes, t-shirts, keychains, and much more (yes, including a Jayne Cobb prop replica hat).

There’s no better place to start than QMx’s Malcom Reynolds 1:6 Scale Master Series Statue is a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, and meticulously recreates Nathan Fillion’s likeness as then Sergeant Reynolds as he holds the banner of the Independents during the Battle of Serenity Valley.

To add to the series is the Kaylee Frye 1:6 Scale Master Series Statue, which bears an amazing likeness to Jewel Staite.

Cartoon Network has released new images and a preview clip from Dark Matter, Saturday’s morning’s swan song episode of Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Along with Young Justice, the show will unfortunately not be returning for further adventures and will be replaced in the DC Nation line-up by the younger skewing Teen Titans Go! and Beware The Batman.

It’s unfortunate that Green Lantern, in either animated form or live action, has failed to click with the masses. This second and ultimately final season not only brought us a solid dark arc involving the Anti-Monitor and the Manhunters, but saw Guy Gardner and Sinestro thrown into the mix as well. The show’s longterm future seemed highly in doubt when it was abruptly pulled from Cartoon Network’s schedule last fall, with no return date immediately announced.

The darker story lines explored by the show didn’t exactly make it ideal fare for the Saturday morning time slot it was given, as the older demo it would ideally target isn’t tuning in live at that time. In addition to Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has also finished it run on the network, with Lucasfilm’s recent announcement that it will be ‘winding down’ production on that series.

Dark Matter synopsis, per Cartoon Network:

In the season finale episode, the Aya Monitor returns to the dawn of time to stop all emotion and all life from ever existing. Now, Hal must find a way to stop her – while Razer realizes the only way to save the universe may mean killing the woman he loves.

Firefly had its long awaited reunion at Comic-Con yesterday, much to the delight of the thousands of rabid Browncoats in attendance. Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive photo shoot with the cast and creator Joss Whedon, CinemaBlend posted a great live blog of the panel, and Collider has a nice wrap up and video of the emotional question that had the crowd on their feet cheering, and brought both Joss Whedon on Nathan Fillion to tears. Science Channel was on hand to cover the event and will air a Firefly Reunion Special on November 11th.

Although Jessica Biel is reportedly set for the female lead opposite Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine as Viper, she held firm at Comic-Con while promoting Total Recall that “It’s a little bit too soon for that kind of an announcement,” in an interview with Hitfix.

Game of Thrones will feature 14 new characters next season, and HBO released a video introduction to all the actors joining the cast, which includes Diana Rigg, most famous for her role as Emma Peel in The Avengers (as in the 1960s British spy television show). Season Three will be based on George R.R. Martin’s massive A Storm of Swords novel, an adaptation that will run the course of two entire seasons. The hit show is set to return to HBO on March 31, 2013.

20th Century Fox is fast tracking their reboot of The Fantastic Four, setting both a director and screenwriter this week. Chronicle helmer Josh Trank has been confirmed to direct the reboot of the Marvel Comics super team. The now done deal follows the rumors regarding Trank inheriting the franchise that started hot on the heels of the success of his found footage ‘teens with superpowers who go bad’ hit for the studio. On the heels of the release of Justice League: Doom yesterday comes this episode of The Daly Show starring Tim Daly and Nathan Fillion, who provide the voices Superman and Green Lantern in the animated feature. I can’t think of a better pep rally video in favor of the “Nerds Rule” movement.

Daly has voiced the Man of Steel in various projects since 1996, while Fillion, in addition to being an early fan favorite to play Green Lantern in the live action film (check out this amazing fan made trailer from 2009), has played the character in two animated features since 2011.

Check out this episode entitled “The Daly Superheroes,” where obviously the two popular television actors are not only great buddies, but have fun affinity for playing out their superhero alter egos in real life. And stay tuned for an additional clever cameo at the end.

The Daly Show is a web series starring real life father and son Tim and Sam Daly, produced by filmmaking brothers Ben and Josh Shelton at Shelton Films.
