The cast for CBS’ Supergirl series is expanding. Ally McBeal alum Calista Flockhart has been cast as Cat Grant in the pilot episode that stars Melissa Benoist in the title role of Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El / Kara Danvers.
Grant is no stranger to the DC Universe, she debuted in the ’80s John Byrne comics era, but here she is a former reporter and described as “a self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo. Cat Grant started her career as a reporter and has built her company into a global powerhouse.” Benoist’s Kara will work as her personal assistant. The character has previously appeared on TV, portrayed by Tracy Scoggins in ABC’s Lois & Clark, and later by Keri Lynn Pratt on The CW’s Smallville.

Based on the characters from DC Comics, the project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Prods., centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist). Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
Nashville‘s Laura Benanti recently joined the cast as Kara’s Kryptonian mother, Alura Zor-El. The show is produced by Warner Bros. TV, Berlanti Prods. and EP’s/writers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler
