The first teaser trailer to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is officially here giving us a sneak peek into this dark follow-up to Man of Steel that will put the two DC Comics icons against one another.
On Wednesday night Zack Snyder announced exclusive IMAX screenings set for April 20th in select theaters to debut the highly anticipated teaser trailer. Unfortunately a low-quality cell phone version leaked online last night complete with Portuguese subtitles.
To nobody’s surprise, Snyder took to Twitter tonight armed with the official two-minute trailer in glorious HD accompanied with the hashtags #NotPirated #NotBlurry. He followed up by promising fans attending the IMAX events on Monday evening they will get some extra footage and swag(!!).

So what do we get in this teaser? A lot of teasing that’s for sure, along with all of Zack Snyder’s signature big screen eye candy.
If anyone had any doubts about WB’s commitment to continue further down the very dark narrative rabbit hole with the DC Cinematic Universe that began in Man of Steel, I think this teaser clearly cements it. This is going to be a film with a lot of brooding superheroes. Superman (Henry Cavill) is a controversial God-like figure, as we can hear from Jesse Eisenberg’s (as Lex Luthor) narration. Kal-El now has cult followers and is under scrutiny by humanity, so it seems via more VO from Holly Hunter, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Jeremy Irons (as Alfred Pennyworth).
This is the logical progression from the events of Man of Steel, where Superman is left to answer for the part he played in the massive destruction done to Metropolis and other areas of the world at the hands of General Zod. It’s a ballsy move to hit it this hard and dark with a years of DC based tentpole films set all the way to 2020.
There are a lot of artsy shots building up to a reveal of a stoic Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) staring at the Batman costume. There are several great shots by the end, but it for the most part builds up to The Dark Knight Returns-inspired showdown between the DC icons with Batman wearing a suit of armor (likely augmented with Kryptonite). Affleck has a filtered voice in the scene, but I assume its for the armor and he’ll get to put his own stamp on the Batman voice when he’s wearing the regular cowl. No visuals of Lex Luthor or Alfred.
I doubt we’ll see a glimpse of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman until much further down the line. This spot certainly delivers on a visual tease level, but I think we have to keep in mind the film is still almost 11 months away from theaters and a teaser trailer is meant to build excitement, not deliver 2 solid minutes of money action shots that give everything away.
I will be uptown at NYC’s flagship IMAX theater for the trailer event on Monday, where per Snyder’s promise, there should be some extra footage that will almost explode off the big BIG screen. Event updates will be coming via Twitter and Instagram followed by a full report here.
