The highly anticipated teaser trailer to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made its big screen debut tonight in IMAX theaters all over the country. I had to opportunity to attend the event held in uptown Manhattan with a group of fellow eager NYC uber fans.
The unfortunate early leak of the trailer last week forced WB’s hand to release an HD version that gave the teaser its proper due. However, seeing it on IMAX is easily the way this should be seen.
The trailer shown was as promised, the same as what was released online, but with a bit of bonus footage. The extra few seconds at the end provided the action money shot sorely lacking in the online version.
Zack Snyder, standing in front of the Batmobile, gave a quick video intro and asked we not record what we were about to see. From Lex Luthor’s “Is it really surprising that the most powerful man in the world should be a figure of controversy?” to Batman’s “Tell me, do you bleed? You will,” the trailer played out quite well in the larger than life format. It looked amazing and crisp with hardly any grain from the blow up considering how dark most of footage is.
Then we were treated to some very quick shots of a stare down between the DC icons, likely taking place narratively shortly after the end of the online teaser, and then they charge at one another inside what looked to be an abandoned factory. Then cut to black right at the point of contact of course.
It wasn’t much, but it was the one big much needed money shot of the two heading into combat. Snyder was back on screen and informed us the Vs. scenes were filmed in native IMAX, so to be aware of that when we watched the footage on second loop. Snyder also said this was exclusive to the event. The bonus shots would not be included in subsequent versions of the teaser trailer either online or in theaters.
Upon our exit we were gifted the two posters Snyder shared via Twitter yesterday, and signed up to receive a complimentary pass to catch the film at the same theater a week before the official release in March 2016.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for March 26th, 2016 and stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Scoot McNairy and Holly Hunter.
