Matt Ryan’s CONSTANTINE To Appear On ARROW!

Arrow-Constantine

Here’s some awesome news for all the Hellblazers keeping the faith for life after cancellation for Matt Ryan’s John Constantine. The star of the cancelled NBC show Constantine will reprise his role as the DC Comics paranormal investigator in the fifth episode of Arrow‘s upcoming season!

The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz made the announcement during today’s Television Critics Association Press Tour presentation. Even though Constantine ran for 13 episodes on NBC, the show was produced by Warner Bros. Television, which also has Arrow and The Flash in its stable, and will allow the character to enjoy a welcome afterlife on another network.

“The series is no longer on the air and luckily one of our parent companies, Warner Bros., was a production company on Constantine. We worked with them and it’s a great one-shot episode,” Pedowitz told the TCA press when asked how it all came about.

Arrow’s EP Marc Guggenheim had to say about Ryan’s guest appearance in a press release:

“We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow. Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series.”

Matt Ryan took to Twitter after the announcement:

As did Stephen Amell:

The now highly anticipated crossover fifth episode of Arrow‘s fourth season is titled Haunted, and here is The CW’s short synopsis:

John Constantine is a weather worn exorcist and expert on the supernatural and the occult.  He is a detective, magician, and a hunter of demons, and will provide critical support to Oliver (Stephen Amell) when arrows aren’t enough.

With supernatural elements and the Lazurus Pit playing a larger role in the CW’s shared DC TV Universe (it returned Thea Queen to life), it won’t be too much of a stretch to have Constantine show up and provide some extra DC Comics star power.

Turns out John Constantine will have an integral part in laying the groundwork for Legends of Tomorrow. While talking to TVInsider, Guggenheim hinted its the unholy resurrection of Sara Lance (who will become White Canary) that prompts Team Arrow to enlist the occult investigator (which also hints that this cameo has been in-the-making for quite some time):

“Unlike Thea, who wasn’t fully dead, the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some unforeseen difficulties…and John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those.”
