Don’t Expect A New STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Trailer At Comic-Con

If you’re looking forward to seeing first look footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming out of the film’s Comic-Con panel next week (whether you’re attending in Hall H or not), according to reports, Lucasfilm will not debut neither a third trailer nor clips from the most highly anticipated movie of 2015.

Sources tell Entertainment Weekly:

First of all, the presentation this Friday afternoon will not include a trailer or any new clips of the movie. The next trailer will be coming in the fall, according to sources with knowledge of the project.

Disney and Lucasfilm will instead show fans behind-the-scenes footage from the J.J. Abrams helmed film in addition to bringing out new cast members on stage who did not attend Star Wars Celebration in May.

The major absentee in May from the classic trilogy was Harrison Ford, who despite his typical inclination to skip appearing at major fan conventions, happened to be recovering from his plane accident at the time. It’s possible Ford may finally join Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in Hall H for that long awaited reunion before thousands of fans (and let’s not forget Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker).

Let’s be clear though, there has been no official announcement of which cast members will be appearing. Director J.J. Abrams, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy are are set for the panel, which will be moderated by Chris Hardwick.

As far as the new cast is concerned, we shouldn’t be surprised to see The Force Awakens‘ villains Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma) and Domhnall Gleeson (The General) along side new Star Wars heroes who took the stage at Star Wars Celebration John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron). Let’s not rule out fan favorites Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke) and returning cast members Anthony Daniels (C-3P0), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) or Kenny Baker (R2-D2) either. Maybe even R2-D2 and B-88 on stage together again?

The withholding of new finished footage from the film, while of course disappointing, should not come as a complete surprise. We’re still six months away from the film’s release, and there is plenty of time in terms of Disney’s massive PR machine to build up excitement for a film that frankly needs very little to build more excitement.

With J.J. Abrams’ penchant for keeping things under heavy lock and key combined with the task of competing with Warner Bros./DC’s expected shock and awe Hall H assault next Friday night (and likely Comic-Con victory lap) with their panel showcasing the upcoming tent poles Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in addition to presumably assembling their big screen Suicide Squad and Justice League on stage. All speculation and expectation point to WB bringing a gun to a knife fight this in this year’s in Hall H showcase showdown.

Both Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios (both owned by Disney) are saving their major ammo from Comic-Con 2015 for later battles they can win decisively. Lucasfilm clearly won the weekend when trailers to both The Force Awakens and Batman v Superman were released online. Additionally the next chapter in the Star Wars saga is poised to break the record for reaching $1 billion at the box office (and likely many other records).

We’ll just have to wait just a little longer for that next sneak peek into a galaxy far far away.
